South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society

The volunteer led and run Society exists to build, operate, maintain and develop a narrow gauge steam railway and access to the North Pennine Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for all.
Crossing regional and county boundaries and based in two of the UK's top 10% most deprived rural areas, over 26 years the railway has become the largest tourist attraction in the area, bringing some 25,000 visitors and overall about £500k each year into the area, supporting economic, social and community development and employment opportunities.

Founded 1983

  • Mission statement

South Tynedale Railway Preservation was founded to recreate a viable, sustainable community railway linking Haltwhistle, Northumberland with Alston Moor, Cumbria, South Tynedale and the wider North Pennines AONB; in some of the UK's top 10% rural most deprived areas.
The railway generates renewable energy onsite, which is used to power Europe's first battery electric locomotives powered by solar PV and also - another first in Europe - promotes the use of renewable biomass by burning wood waste briquettes in a restored Hunslet steam locomotive.
The all-year round community railway is supported by a successful, seasonal heritage steam railway and by a new, £2m South Tynedale Endowment, being created with the £1M of match funding support from the Heritage Lottery Fund Catalyst Endowment Programme.

  • Aims

South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society aims to:

    • To recreate and operate the 13-mile Haltwhistle - Alston branchline as a viable community railway, replacing the link lost when ex-BR branchline closed in 1976, transforming the local economy.
