Winchester & District Mencap Society

Winchester & District Mencap Society works to improve life for people with a learning disability and their families and to include members in opportunities that the rest of society take for granted.

Winchester Mencap offers weekly drop ins, person centred planning a buddying system to help members learn about accessible community facilities, supports individuals and families through campaigns for better services, provides welfare advice and information, opportunities to keep fit, learn about healthy eating and follow their dreams of being on stage with their very own Blue Apple Theatre company.

To make opportunities for keeping fit and healthy and taking part in local recreation facilities more accessible Winchester Mencap runs Low Level Circuits: accessible circuit training, and Friday lunch club where members learn about healthy affordable food.

Winchester Mencap seeks to build bridges of understanding between different ability and community groups so that learning disabled members are better able to access the local community and take part in local life and employment as fully as possible.
To this end in 2005 Winchester Mencap launched the fully inclusive Blue Apple Theatre where able and learning disabled performers share their love of devising and performing with everyone equally valued. The main company puts on two main fuly costumed productions to the public each year. 5 years ago members were learning about story and what happens next Now they are tackling Shakespeare with the acclaimed A Blue Apple Midsummer Night's Dream performed in promenade summr 2010.

The award winning Blue Apple Core are a small group of ambitious auditioned learning disabled actors who seek to use drama and dance performances and workshops to change people's attitudes and understanding of learning disability through performance. The Apple Core are currently developing a touring drama' Living Without Fear ' which tackles the difficult issues surrounding disability hate crime.
Working with film maker William Jessop Blue Apple has been commissioned to develop a film 'Freddies Story' which looks at improving communication and diagnosis in hospitals and is used for training medical staff.

In addition the Blue Apple office offers specific work training to learning disabled volunteers to help people prepare for mainstream employment. Person centred planning,
