ERIC, The Children's Bowel and Bladder Charity

ERIC is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the lives of children and young people with continence problems – day- and night-time wetting, constipation and soiling. We provide:
• A dedicated telephone Helpline allowing families to talk to a childhood continence advisor;
• A website packed with information on all aspects of childhood continence and
• Online message boards where parents and children can establish contact and offer peer support.

  • Mission statement

    At ERIC, we believe that every child with a continence problem has the right to be heard, to be treated with dignity and to receive the care they deserve. By equipping children and teenagers to address and overcome continence problems and the social and emotional issues arising from them, the impact can be extraordinary: they regain control over their lives, feel happier and more confident, can take part in the same activities as their peers and can reach their potential and enjoy life to the full.
    All too often, children and families suffer in silence and hope they will just grow out of the problem. Left untreated, however, bladder and bowel problems can lead to serious health complications, including kidney damage. Support from GPs and health professionals varies enormously in quality and availability and typically doesn’t help with the social and emotional effects of continence problems. Cuts continue to be made to school nurse budgets, meaning thousands of children are not getting the support they need. In England alone, there are 15,000 hospital admissions for paediatric cases of chronic constipation and urinary tract infections each year, 80% of which could be avoided (and a significant cost saving to the NHS made) through better services and support in primary care and community settings.
