the Virtual Doctors

The Virtual Doctors is a telemedicine health service for Africa, using the mobile broadband network to connect rural health centres with doctors around the world for diagnostic and treatment advice

Founded 2009

  • Mission statement

The Virtual Doctors is a charity at the intersection of technology and medicine (Telemedicine). The Virtual Doctors provides sophisticated, yet easy to use bespoke telemedicine software and computer tablets with internet access. This enables rural health workers in Zambia, in health centres where there are no doctors, to send electronic patient files with images, to volunteer doctors in the UK for diagnosis and treatment advice, helping to save lives.

    • There are far too few doctors in Zambia – only 1600 for a population of over 14 million.
    • Two thirds of doctors live in urban areas; two thirds of the population live in rural Zambia.
    • Most rural health centres are poorly staffed and under-equipped.
    • This means patients are often not properly treated, so their condition deteriorates.
    • They then have to walk or cycle for many hours, or even days, to reach a district hospital.

    The service aims to:

    • Reduce unnecessary mortality and morbidity and enable a wider range of conditions to be treated in local communities
    • Reduce referrals to distant and hard to reach hospitals
    • Improve the skills and knowledge of rural health workers

  • Aims

    the Virtual Doctors aims to:

    • Improve primary healthcare available locally to rural communities in Africa
    • Reduce the number of referrals required to distant hospitals
    • Support and improve the skills and knowledge of rural health workers in Africa
