Charity information

Lumos is a charity which is working to transform the lives of disadvantaged children by facilitating the end of institutional care for good. It does this in two ways:

• At a political level to accelerate and improve the quality of reform in health, education and social protection services
• At a practical level working with providers of children’s services to demonstrate the value of family-based care

There are currently 1 million children living in large residential institutions across Europe. Most of these children are not orphans but from ethnic minorities, poor backgrounds or are disabled. Published research proves that institutionalisation damages children’s health and development, and reduces their life chances. With experts in child protection, public health and social inclusion, and whose advice is sought by other concerned organisations, Lumos is able to effect real and lasting change.
