Common Ground

Common Ground believes we need to live better with nature. That means all of us. We focus on the local, and on democratic popular activism, encouraging people to work together for their place. In working to inspire, inform and involve people in taking more responsibility for their everyday surroundings, we feed the need for meaning as well as survival. We link nature and culture, encouraging the sharing of knowledge and skills to become more competent and creative in enriching both ecology and living.

The campaign for Local Distinctiveness, out of which came our big book ‘England in Particular’, explores the accumulation of story upon history upon natural history that results as we work to shape the land, make a living and live our lives. With practical materials and replicable initiatives we offer ways of getting together and getting started, from creating festivals to producing food initiating projects such as Parish Maps, Local Flora Britannica, Apple Day, Community Orchards, Tree Dressing Day which lead communities on their own journeys.
