The Sudanese Community Association of South Wales

People from Sudan have been coming to make their homes in Cardiff for many years. There is a tradition of coming to the city to study including medicine. Sudanese people are close knit and private, but are traditionally a warm and friendly community, coming from both Christian and Muslim faiths; offering support to each other and also very willing to engage in other local communities.

In recent years this community has grown, which has led to the Sudanese Community Association forming in South Wales. The Association considers how best to help support Sudanese people in both maintaining traditional cultural influences, but also to encourage greater integration into the wider community of Cardiff. Tha Associations aim is to establish a Community Centre, where educational and training activities can be provided, including the promotion of celebratory events. The centre will also offer space for prayer. This Mosque will be open to all genders and will also welcome for prayer those of a Christian Faith. There are other Mosques in Cardiff, to which Sudanese people are welcome, but these Mosques tend to be predominantly centred around Pakistani and Asian community, which means there are potential language barriers, as well as subtle cultural differences. This makes it hard for those who are new to the area or less confident to feel comfortable and that their needs are being met.
