Founded 1971

  • Mission statement

Founded by Bessie Berman in 1971, with a small grant from the Cadbury Trust, Wargrave House School has grown to provide a specialist environment for 75 children and young people from the ages of 5 to 19 with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. A non-maintained special school, charity no. 1104715, registered with DfE, OFSTED and the Care Quality Commission, Wargrave House provides 38 weekly residential accommodation and day education with highly trained specialist staff. It is 'a showcase of the very best educational provision and wrap-around care for students with ASD. Every student is an individual success story' (OFSTED 2010). Our services will be extended in September 2012 when we open our new 19-25 Specialist College approved by the Education Funding Agency.

    We aim:
•To provide an environment in which each child / young adult is given opportunities and teaching to develop his/her ability to become a happy, participating member of the family, school and community.
•To promote a disciplined, happy and friendly atmosphere whilst simultaneously providing situations which encourage independence, self-advocacy and autonomy.
•To encourage pupils as far as possible not only to have a positive self regard but also to treat others with courtesy, respect and tolerance.
•To develop a clear understanding of right and wrong.
•To compensate for the disadvantage society may place upon children and young people with autistic spectrum disorders.
