Dorset Action on Abuse

We work to support adults who were abused as children. As children it is often impossible to seek help; most abusers control their victims and ensure it is not reported by brainwashing and frightening the child into silence. Most childhood abuse thereby remains hidden, leaving large numbers of adults suffering ongoing distress. They are often extremely isolated due to the emotional effects of the abuse and its impact upon work, private and social relationships. Direct consequences of childhood abuse include self harm, depression, suicide, substance abuse, eating disorders, inability to maintain work, and the continuing cycle of domestic violence.

Our objective is to relieve the suffering and distress of both men and women adult survivors of childhood abuse (sexual, physical, emotional and neglect) in Dorset. We achieve this by providing 3 key services; professional counselling; peer led survivor support groups; training seminars to professionals, volunteers and the public.

• 21% of girls and 11% of boys experience childhood sexual abuse in Britain
• 31% of these children reach adulthood without having disclosed their abuse
