Royal School of Needlework

Our mission is to teach, practise and promote the art of hand embroidery to the highest standards, within both historical and contemporary contexts. We have the distinction of being the only UK organisation teaching and utilising the full range of hand-embroidery stitches and techniques.

The RSN comprises three core elements:
• The education programme, which for many decades included running an Apprenticeship; in more recent years many shorter courses covering particular skills have been added, including courses run regionally in the UK and even in America.

• The Collection, 60,000 items, British and international, from drawings and designs to thousands of pieces of embroidery dating from the sixteenth century to the present day.

• The Studio, in which embroidered items are restored - from christening robes to banners and tapestries - and new works are created by commission.

Education has always been at our heart, and in September 2009 we introduced the RSN Foundation Degree, the only degree in hand embroidery in the UK. The course offers a new specialist education – a unique combination of practical, academic and work-based learning, maintaining our traditional focus on the highest standards of technique and professional competence while also emphasising and grounding students in design and encouraging the pushing of boundaries in contemporary application of hand embroidery skills.
