Scots Music Group

The Scots Music Group brings people together and builds communities through traditional music song and dance. It is a strongly participative organisation, which aims to support its members to develop their confidence and to take their music out into the community, thus supporting other community groups and voluntary organisations.

The Scots Music Group (SMG) aims to:

1. Use traditional music, song and dance to bring people together to gain new personal, social and learning skills, build confidence, self-esteem and promote identity.

2. Bring high quality practitioners of Scots music, song and dance into the life of the organisation as tutors, to inspire and encourage the students.

3. Give participants the skills, confidence and opportunities to perform together and take music back into the heart of their community.

4. Use a participatory style of learning and ensure that the participants are involved in all the aspects of the organisations development through feedback groups, committees and voluntary activities.

5. Develop a structured programme of training and social activities that will support participants to progress through the programme and move onto further activities or join mainstream classes.

6. Work in collaboration with others including creating links between the diversity of music, dance and song in Scottish Life.
