The Sierra Leone Sickle Cell Disease Society aims to alleviate the suffering and loss of life due to sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder that is a major cause of infant mortality.

    Our Mission is to improve the health & lives of sickle cell patients throughout Sierra Leone and elsewhere by:

    • Maintaining health
    • Relieving sickness
    • Counselling patients and their families
    • Identifying babies at risk of sickle cell disease by newborn screening
    • Advocating in the care and support of sickle cell patients and their families
    • Advancing education
    • Creating, stimulating and fostering public awareness of sickle cell disease
    • Promoting medical and social research on sickle cell disease

  • Aims

    SIERRA LEONE SICKLE CELL DISEASE SOCIETY aims to:

    • Identifying babies with SCD at birth to ensure that affected babies are put on a counselling, monitoring and treatment regimen as soon as possible
    • By promoting medical and social research, more effective treatments and prevention strategies may be discovered and thus facilitate better management of the disease.
    • Relieving sickness. Relieving sickness by appropriate investigation, referral and treatment when patients become acutley ill.
    • Counselling patients and their families Informing patients and relatives about the nature of SCD, using trained counsellors.
    • Maintaining health Provide guidelines and mentoring for ensuring that patients remain well. Qualified staff required
