Chance UK

Chance UK is an early intervention mentoring charity working with 5-11 year olds with behavioural
difficulties. The children are matched with adult volunteer mentors for a one year to achieve change.

Founded 1995

  • Mission statement

Our mission is to identify and intervene early in the lives of children aged 5-11 with behaviour difficulties which indicate they are at risk of developing anti-social or criminal behaviour in the future. We aim to improve their lives by offering each child a year of weekly one-to-one meetings with a carefully screened, trained and supervised adult volunteer mentor who works in a solution-focused way to encourage development of acceptable and positive behavioural responses through activities such as games in the park, visiting sports centres and interesting fun outings. We also offer support to the children’s parents and/or carers.

Our objectives are to introduce more stability into the children’s lives; to reduce the isolation they and their families may be experiencing; to directly address the difficulties experienced by each child; to support the children as they find the motivation and life skills they need to move forward; to channel their disruptive energy into projects that encourage a sense of personal achievement; to engender in them a sense of self-worth.

Chance UK is an award-winning registered charity, one of only six organisations in the UK to be re-awarded GoldStar status by the Cabinet Office as an exemplar of good practice in mentoring and befriending.

We follow all appropriate child protection guidelines and practices, promote equality of opportunity, and have non-discriminatory policies and practices.

  • Aims

    Chance UK aims to:

    • To help the children find ways of improving their behaviour which enables them to stay in mainstream school avoid violent situations, make & maintain positive peer friendships.
    • To raise the aspirations by finding what the children are good at, what they would like to achieve, learning new skills, introducing them to groups that can provide diversionary activities post mentor
    • To help the children improve their educational prospects through improved concentration, experiential learning and one to one support from mentors for weaker areas ie reading, maths etc
    • To offer practical & emotional support to the parents of the children we work with to ensure that the changes that the children achieve can be maintained & developed post mentoring.
