New Park Community and Arts Association

Established in 1974, the story is that volunteers have turned a dilapidated Victorian primary school into home-base for over sixty local groups of all kinds. The groups cover all ages, and include drama and art, fitness and yoga, diet, jive and jazz, furniture-restoring, child-minding - you name it - and at least two groups, the cinema and martial arts, have a national reputation. The Centre has managed to run the enterprise at a small annual profit. An extraordinary achievement, but now the building now needs urgent work just to keep it going, and it is time to take a bold new step.

Centre users and all sorts of local interest groups have had a hand in developing the final plan to meet the growing demand for community space, developing the martial arts facilities and an expanded arts cinema, and it also has the enthusiastic support of Chichester District and City Councils - who want the Centre also to function as an information ‘hub’ for community activities throughout the area. We achieved planning permission in October and have raised over £1. 3m towards the total requirement of £3. 9 million, so we now need to raise the remaining £2. 9 million and get construction itself under way in 2009/10.
