Hearts & Minds

Hearts & Minds is an arts-in-health charity, working across Scotland in hospitals and other NHS units using professional performance skills to help people cope with & overcome the stresses of illness.

Founded 1997

  • Mission statement

Hearts & Minds’ mission is to maximise opportunities for all vulnerable people, those affected by ill health and those who are thought of as ‘hard to reach’, by positively transforming care environments across Scotland, through the performing arts.

Our Clowndoctors (children and young people) and Elderflowers (people with dementia) programmes use European style theatre clowning and humour to provide sensitive, safe and individually tailored quality interactions for our participants, delivered by professionally trained and experienced arts-in-health practitioners. Our practitioners use their creative skills to engage with the individual person and encourage and enable communication, thereby improving levels of interactions and enhancing the relationships between the participants, the practitioners, fellow residents, family members as well as care staff.

Trust and respect are the basis of our work. Creating authentic connections and engagements with the individual are at its heart. Hope, laughter and increased resilience are often a by-product. Our philosophy is to always look beyond the illness and ability of the person at their individual psychological and emotional needs, so helping to overcome challenges such as stress, pain, frustration, loss of control and grief.

  • Aims

    Hearts & Minds aims to:

    • To provide high quality arts engagement to contribute to participants’ wellbeing and for them to experience and enjoy a better quality of life.
    • To use the performing arts to build meaningful and lasting relationships with children and young people in hospitals, hospices, special schools and respite units and ladies and gentlemen living with dementia in care homes; and their families and health care staff too.
