Royal National Children's Foundation

The Royal National Children’s Foundation (RNCF) helps vulnerable children facing abuse, neglect or trauma at home, by enabling them to attend state and independent boarding schools. As part of their Assisted Boarding, the children benefit from tailored care and structured living support in a safe environment; this allows them to fulfil their personal and academic potential.

Founded 1827

  • Mission statement

The RNCF’s beneficiaries are children and young people, who have severely limited or no family support. Their adverse domestic circumstances have usually arisen through serious mental or physical illness of their guardian, which may include drug or alcohol abuse. Most are living on or below the poverty line and are facing being taken into Local Authority care.

When the RNCF agrees to support a child (who is usually aged between 7 and 13 years old), it makes a commitment to continue that support until the child leaves secondary school. The solution offered by the charity is not a quick fix, but a deep and lasting one.

The RNCF was founded in 1827 by Dr Andrew Reed, with Queen Victoria as its original Patron. Today, the charity enjoys the active support of HRH Princess Royal as its Patron and helps nearly 400 children from across the UK.

94% of children helped by the RNCF successfully complete their secondary-school education and go on to lead safe and full lives, free from the abuse, neglect or trauma they previously faced.
