Immigration detainees, mostly asylum seekers, are held indefinitely while the UK Border Agency tries to arrange their deportation. Many cannot be deported because they are stateless or their country is too dangerous. As a result, some people are detained for years in conditions similar to prison, simply because they are foreign and do not have the right to live in Britain. Detainees are often traumatised by their experiences in their own country, including torture and imprisonment, and are shocked to be detained again in the UK.

London Detainee Support Group is a dynamic, grass-roots human rights organisation which helps to defend detainees’ rights in the face of indefinite detention. We provide a life-line to the outside world for isolated detainees at Harmondsworth and Colnbrook detention centres, near Heathrow Airport. Our team of fifty volunteers from various walks of life visit individual detainees regularly to help them to overcome the ordeal of detention. We also help detainees to access their rights to bail addresses, which can allow them to be released and avoid homelessness. We work with lawyers to help detainees to seek their release on bail and asylum. Finally, our campaign “Detained Lives” calls for a more just detention system and an end to indefinite detention.
