The Ellen MacArthur Trust

The Ellen MacArthur Trust takes young people in recovery from cancer and leukaemia sailing, to restore confidence and a sense of independence after treatment.

Set up by Dame Ellen MacArthur in 2003 after she sailed with a similar charity in france, we initially take young people aged from 8-18 on four-day trips on cruising yachts, where they are encouraged to participate in everything from the washing up to helming the yacht. Each night the yachts stay at a different port and the crews join together for the land based evening activities, then return to sleep on their yacht. The emphasis of the trips are on teamwork and having fun in a safe and supportive environment.

The young people who find they have a passion for sailing or just love the atmosphere on the trips get the opportunity to return each year to further their sailing skills with theTrust at various events such as our Bradwell residential dinghy week, or the JPMorgan Round the Island Race. Once they reach 18 they can return to volunteer on a trip, providing a positive role model for those joining us for the first time.
