CIA Basketball was established 15 years ago by two pastors and professional sportsmen. Both had sons of similar ages and were alarmed by the lack of constructive activities and positive role models in their local community. The project aimed to reach young men and women at street level and with no prior funding, now uses the medium of basketball to coach and mentor thousands of young people in over 40 local schools, works alongside young people with learning and behavioural difficulties and physical disabilities and with charities and leisure centres serving the community.
The club also operates an accredited counselling psychotherapy unit providing support to our players, their families, the church and the wider community. By installing discipline through sport and by giving young people a focus, the club is able to curb many of the issues relating to young people today. With the support of businesses and individuals with a common interest in making a positive impact on the community we can go a lot further.
