Vacation Chamber Orchestras

With a flourishing 15 year career, and a patronage from Sir Simon Rattle, The Vacation Chamber Orchestra exists to equip the next generation of musicians with both the skills and experience to produce orchestral and chamber music of the highest quality. Comprised of members from the UK’s top conservatoires and universities, VaCO offers to young players opportunities largely absent from school, college and university training. Meeting four times a year, and following a short period of intense rehearsal under the tutelage of some of the UK’s most eminent tutors and professionals, the orchestra gives a series of concerts in up to 6 venues in the local area, often incorporating outreach and educational work. Since 2001, the orchestra has located one course annually in Europe (under the guise of EVaCO), in order to allow British players to get to know their European counterparts, and encourage chamber music across the continent. All courses offer chamber orchestra and ensemble coaching, opportunities for soloists, composers and conductors, and the chance for school students considering the pursuit of music at university or conservatoire level to meet and learn from those a few years ahead. Recently, in response to the lack of training opportunities for students interested in a career in arts administration, the orchestra has also encouraged members to become involved with the running and administration of the organisation.

Combining a professional rehearsal technique and schedule with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere encourages students to give their best and produce performances of an outstandingly high quality, in addition to equipping them with the contacts and experience to bridge the often difficult time between leaving full-time education and first entering the profession. It is no coincidence that former members of the orchestra have gone on to forge careers with many top UK ensembles and as session players for film, television and commercial music projects.
