The Donkey Sanctuary

The Donkey Sanctuary works in 35 countries, reaching out to millions of working donkeys. Through the introduction of health and welfare clinics, community-engagement programmes and specialist training workshops, thousands of donkeys are now living a better life free from misery and neglect. Their future is brighter but sadly there are many more donkeys still living in insufferable conditions.

Founded 1969

  • Mission statement

To transform the quality of life for donkeys, mules and people worldwide through greater understanding, collaboration and support, and by promoting lasting, mutually life-enhancing relationships.

Unfortunately in the UK, Ireland and Europe many donkeys still urgently need sanctuary from abuse, neglect and even abandonment. Last year 960 donkeys came into our care; many of these beautiful animals were rescued from hunger, ill-health and unimaginable hardship. They are now guaranteed a safe home for life, free from pain and suffering.

The Donkey Sanctuary aims to enrich the lives of both donkeys and people through building positive connections between the two. There are six centres across the UK where donkeys who often have been rescued from terrible conditions themselves, spend time with children and adults with additional needs.
