foundation human nature (UK)

Foundation human nature (fhn) is a non-governmental, non-religious, non-political, non-commercial organisation involved, primarily, in healthcare provision in some of the poorest countries of the world under an ethos of sustainable development. Our independent stance means that we take decisions based solely on maximising the help our projects can offer. We work with communities who have little or no national healthcare infrastructure available and currently operate 2 rural health centres in Ghana and Ecuador. Fhn ensures that every aspect of our work is culturally, socially and financially appropriate. We work hard to build up the trust of the local communities in order for them to see fhn as their partner and not simply a donor organisation funded by wealthy people in developed countries. Once this trust has been achieved and a health centre built and operational, we expand our activities into sanitation, education, gender development, renewable energy and micro-finance.

We are a registered charity in the UK, Germany, USA, Ghana and Ecuador. Our funding comes from a network of supporters paying a monthly contribution, from grants, from sporting events and fundraising parties. We are run entirely by volunteers in the donor countries. This means that after deducting minimal administration costs, over 99% of financial support given to us goes straight to the projects rather than funding salaries, offices or expensive marketing campaigns. In that way, supporters can be sure that their money goes exactly where they want and expect it to go.

We operate a partnership based approach, spending a huge amount of time in consultation with local communities to make sure they are provided with the resources they need rather than what has been decided for them. For example, our Ecuadorian centre was funded by supporters in Germany but built by the local communities themselves after a significant consultation period. We believe in training local people with skills and knowledge to enable them to help their own communities and build their own futures rather than being reliant on fhn. The ultimate goal for all of fhn’s projects is for them to be self-financing and self-run so that fhn’s financial resources can be moved to new areas and new communities.
