ClearVision runs a national postal lending library of children's books in print and braille, designed to be shared by blind and sighted children and adults reading together. Over a thousand families, schools, nurseries and libraries all over the UK borrow our books. Our books are enjoyed by children learning braille, most of whom have sighted parents who don't read braille, and couldn't otherwise help their children learn to read. They're also loved by braille-reading parents and grandparents who share them with sighted children. We believe sharing stories is one of the great pleasures of childhood, and should be something everyone can enjoy.
How do our books work? Sadly, you can't walk into a bookshop and choose a book in print and braille together. They're hard to come by even online, and are too expensive for families to own many. That's why we run a lending library. We take mainstream picture books- classics like The Gruffalo or Peter Rabbit- and add clear plastic pages with the text brailled onto them between the paper pages. We also have brailled board books for babies, short chapter books and easy-reads for teenagers. We're also lucky to have a great collection of tactile books for schools, in which all the illustrations are specially designed to be read by touch; great for teaching the touch-skills a child needs to learn before they master braille.
It costs £18-45 to add a book to our library. We need to add lots of new books to keep our library running.
ClearVision Project aims to:
- To run a top quality UK postal lending library of children's books in print and braille together.
- Support reading by touch and promote it to everyone who needs it.
