Act for Change

Act for Change helps young people & young adults engage the world, their families and milieux. Together we develop and model interventions furthering inclusive, socially supportive community.

Founded 2007

  • Mission statement

Our focus is on underlying individual and collective trauma: recognising the presence of adverse childhood experiences and long-term effects, offering tools to process it, building resilience and nurturing a more active participation in society - in school, college and community life.
Our research (and part of our raison d’être) indicates clearly that unprocessed personal and or collective trauma may lie behind much apparent “lack of engagement” as many “hard to reach” individuals, families and groups of young people. This can include historical trauma (eg migration/conflict histories) as well as more recent experiences sometimes re-awoken or reignited by experiences with us in our role as local authorities. Addressing the background traumata carefully and respectfully, building resilience, can be first steps towards building a lasting community life.

We work short and longer term with individual young people, groups of young people, their families and extended families, their peer groups and with residents of housing estates.
We typically work with very diverse groups who may find common ground in their shared themes. These have included for instance social exclusion, prejudice, attack - sometimes violence - exile, rootlessness, and having the feeling that one has little power to change ones immediate circumstances. Providing a wider lens, on these themes is one way to improve community cohesion.

  • Aims

    Act for Change aims to:

    • To bring awareness that helps transform conflict to young people and their families and communities who have suffered collective and/or individual trauma via individual access psychological therapy.
    • Where trauma has resulted in isolation and marginalisation to create spaces where each voice can be heard and bring awareness to the roles of victim and perpetrator and the many bystander roles.
