INQUEST Charitable Trust

INQUEST is a charity that provides a free independent advice service to bereaved people on contentious deaths and their investigation with a particular focus on deaths in custody.

Founded 1995

  • Mission statement

INQUEST Charitable Trust was established in 1995 to complement and assist the work of its sister organisation INQUEST which was founded in 1981. In March 2004 the two organisations merged into a single charitable organisation known publicly as INQUEST.

INQUEST is the only organisation in England and Wales that provides a specialist, comprehensive advice service on contentious deaths and their investigation to bereaved people, lawyers, other advice and support agencies, the media, parliamentarians and the wider public. It provides a comprehensive information pack and referral service where appropriate to any bereaved family facing an inquest.

As a result of its unrivalled body of knowledge, experience and expertise on contentious deaths and their investigation developed through its casework, INQUEST has a unique overview of how the whole system operates from the perspective of bereaved families and their advisors and is widely consulted at a governmental level.
