Blue Ventures Conservation

Blue Ventures Conservation is a UK-based charity dedicated to working with local communities to conserve threatened marine habitats and resources for the betterment of people and nature. Funded through ecotourism revenue, Blue Ventures brings paying volunteers to project sites and trains them in scientific research, community outreach and on-the-ground conservation. In 2005, Blue Ventures became the first European organisation to win the prestigious United Nations SEED award in recognition of innovative, locally-driven partnerships delivering sustainable development and livelihoods.

Since 2003, Blue Ventures has partnered with the village of Andavadoaka, located along Madagascar’s southwest coast, to protect the marine resources locals rely upon for survival. Demand for these resources is growing as more villagers move to the coasts and international fishing companies increasingly exploit Madagascar’s ocean waters for global markets. We are collaborating with Andavadoaka and neighbouring villages to develop sustainable livelihoods as alternatives to destructive fishing practices. In 2007, this partnership won the UNDP Equator Prize in recognition of outstanding community efforts for poverty reduction and biodiversity conservation.
