Selective Mutism Information & Research Association (SMIRA)

SMIRA is a Parent Support Group for families of Selectively Mute children, based in Leicester, UK. Lead by both parents and professionals with many years experience of Selective Mutism, it provides information and support for parents and education and healthcare professionals throughout the UK and also has many International contacts, including Germany, Belgium, Norway, Japan and Australia.

Selective Mutism is an anxiety-based condition of childhood, similar to social phobia, in which sufferers find themselves unable to speak to strangers, or in an environment where they do not feel comfortable, most commonly in school. The condition is known to commence early in life, and can be transitory, such as on starting school or on being admitted to hospital, but in rare cases it may persist and last right through a child’s school life.
