Herpes Viruses Association

The Herpes Viruses Association helps people with any of the nine humanherpes viruses since 1981. Popular, well-regarded website, phone volunteers answer questions about herpes simplex and shingles.

Founded 1985

  • Mission statement

Our goal is to change the public's perception of 'herpes' from being a stigmatised word to its rightful place as a 'cold sore on the genitals'.
We are a patient support organisation, run by patients. We offer a helpline (calls from a landline charged at local rate), website, leaflets and quarterly journals about herpes simplex (genital herpes and cold sores), talks, workshops and social events.
Our helpline is run by trained volunteers who can answer medical questions on the condition as well as counsel regarding the psychological worries that sometimes affect people. Our website gets over 80,000 visitors a month. Some people may get frequent recurrences, however most people with herpes simplex are unaware that they have it.
As we are not an ‘attractive cause’, we need free-thinking people – or charitable trusts - to fund us. The small grant we had received from the Department of Health has now stopped (the DH is only funding 'new projects'), so the bulk of our funding is from people we have helped. Or people who recognise that a sexual life is of vital importance to a healthy life.
The charity has now gained the 'Information Standard' which assures visitors that all information is referenced and independently verified.
