Amnesty International was formed in 1961 and is a movement of ordinary people standing up for humanity and human rights. Our vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In pursuit of this vision, our mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of these rights.
Since its formation Amnesty International has worked on many thousands of individual cases, securing the release of prisoners of conscience and saving lives. In 1977, we were awarded the Noble Peace Prize, and have been instrumental in the setting up of the International Criminal Court and the passing of UN Resolutions against torture and use of the death penalty. The core of our work remains individuals and communities at risk of human rights abuses worldwide. We work with prisoners of conscience, for an end to the death penalty, on fair trials and international law, to end violence against women and on refugee rights worldwide.
