Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange

Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange have celebrated contemporary visual art and the artists that make it since 1895. It expanded in 2007 to include a new gallery, The Exchange, in Penzance, and we run a full programme of exhibitions, learning and participation and events across the two venues and increasingly, offsite. With an annual audience of around 55,000, resident and local, and we are committed to engagement with our community and creating social and creative change.

  • Mission statement

Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange presents a national and international programme of contemporary art from its two venues, Newlyn Art Gallery, Newlyn and The Exchange, Penzance, Cornwall. Increasingly we also present world-class contemporary art in non-gallery locations, reaching new audiences and engaging with new ideas.
Our mission is to connect Cornwall with visual arts internationally, for the benefit of the community and development of artists. Our values are to be change-making; rooted in place and to be part of a global art conversation and we believe that art can inspire and drive change.
Our programme seeks to reflect our interests in PLACE and PEOPLE:
PLACE - communities; histories; cultural traditions; geography; artistic heritage and contemporary profile as a centre for creative production; and
PEOPLE - we will build on recent successes, including ‘A Postcard to Penzance’ and ‘Home Service’ project based in carehomes to test the potential for the art institution to become a catalyst for meaningful change in its locality.

  • Aims

Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange aims to:

    • Drive up the quality of what we produce. Placing outstanding artists at the centre of our work with our audience, including those least connected with the gallery.
    • Engage more people. In embracing the notion of the gallery as social space we aim to reflect the specific character and needs of Cornwall's population,
    • Take a lead role in strengthening our sector. It is essential that we work with cultural and other organisations to achieve the greatest impact to the wider creative ecology in Cornwall
    • Improve our financial position. To achieve our goals, we need to ensure that the organisation is robust and resilient by exploring new income and putting across a clear case for support.
    • Ensure our staff, volunteers and trustees get even better at what they do by investing appropriately in our team and provide them with the space and and opportunity to flourish
