Whittington Hospital Charitable Fund

The Whittington is an award winning hospital located between Archway and Highgate in North London. The Whittington aims to offer a high quality hospital service provided in a caring, friendly and efficient way. We want to be respected and selected as the local hospital of choice and regarded as an asset for the community within which we are based. We aim to be recognised for excellence in:
· ambulatory care
· the care of long term conditions
· the treatment of common cancers
· the provision of first class undergraduate and postgraduate teaching

Currently, the Whittington is engaged in a fundraising appeal to raise £600,000 to move expand and refurbish our neonatal intensive care unit. We want to nearly double the size our unit not simply to treat more sick and premature babies, but so we can offer a better environment for their parents and families too. The Building for Babies appeal aims to radically improve the environment of our NICU to be able to provide:
· Better care for babies
· Better support of families
· Better facilities for staff

Your gift will allow us to purchase very needed equipment and facilities. These include:

8 intensive care cots – for babies born between 3 months and six weeks earlier than they should be. These babies need very complicated medical attention with machines to help them breathe, to be fed and one-to-one nursing.
- 12 high dependency cots – these babies need help breathing and tube feeding but less hands-on attention from the medical staff
- 10 special care cots – special care babies need to have their hearts and breathing observed and may be tube fed. Sometimes these babies can also be given physiotherapy if they have jaundice.
- 4 family/baby rooms – these rooms are set aside for babies who may need to be kept on their own. These babies may have problems with their immune systems or be experiencing drug withdrawal which can be distressing for them and for other babies. Often, however, these rooms are used for babies in their final days of life and they offer families time to be together. In our current unit, we only have one of these rooms.

As of OCtober 2007 we have raised over half the funds needed. But, we cannot do it without the help of people like you in our community. Your gift will ensure each baby gets the best possible start in life.
