Hypospadias is a little known but common “birth defect” that occurs in the genital equipment of males.
HSUK has been formed to improve the quality of life of boys and men who are born with the condition known as hypospadias, by enabling them to understand more about the condition; educate health professionals and GPs about the condition and its specific treatment needs; and to provide a website and associated resources.
At present the incidence of hypospadias is about 7 or 8 per 1000 live male births, so there is a significant community of men with the condition. Hypospadias is now the leading birth defect in boys, being more common than some other congenital conditions such as cleft lip and palate. But there is virtually no information available for the lay reader; and the condition is only touched on in medical school, as part of the urology specialism.
