Starfish Greathearts Foundation

Starfish Greathearts Foundation is an international children's charity responding to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in southern Africa. We care for vulnerable children, particularly those orphaned by HIV/AIDS.

Founded 2002

  • Mission statement

Our aim is to empower communities to deliver professional and sustainable services to children by delivering crisis intervention, comprehensive care and development programmes to more than 12,000 children. We have a focus on four main areas of improvement: child protection, capacity building, healthcare and education. We seek to invest in projects which will give training and expertise to local adults, which in turn will improve the future for some of the most vulnerable children in South Africa.

These vital intervention and development programmes are delivered through partnerships with 33 non-governmental and community based organisations at grassroots level. Starfish has been instrumental in developing and establishing this coalition of local organisations in order to facilitate a co-ordinated nation-wide holistic response to the needs of children orphaned by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Starfish is registered as a charity (1093862) and company (4528018) in the United Kingdom and as a non-profit organisation (039-447-NPO), Section 21 Company (2003/002865/08) and Public Benefit Organisation (930008639) in South Africa. Starfish has recently been established as a charity in the United States of America and has a volunteer division in Canada. Starfish UK is a member of the UK Consortium on AIDS and International Development as well as the Fundraising Standards Board.

  • Aims

    Starfish Greathearts Foundation aims to:

    • We aim to bring life, hope and opportunity, one child at a time.
    • We aim to increase the number of orphaned and vulnerable children supported by CBOs, without compromising quality of care.
    • We aim to alleviate the cycle of poverty, which has been caused by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
    • We aim to empower communities, through holistic care and support, educational and emotional support, making sure we don't have another 'lost generation' of children.
    • We aim to turn the tide on AIDS, providing healthcare and educational advice on the disease, whilst providing psychological and emotional advice on dealing with the stigma of HIV/AIDS
