Julia's House - The Dorset and Wiltshire Children's Hospices

Julia’s House is the only children's hospice in Dorset and Wiltshire. We provide practical and emotional support for families caring for a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition, providing frequent and regular support in their own homes, in the community or at our hospices.

Founded 1997

  • Mission statement

Julia’s House provides outstanding, award-winning care for babies, children and young people with life-shortening and life-threatening conditions, and support for their families.

We are not a typical hospice. We provide end of life care when the time comes, but our main services is frequent, flexible and tailored respite care throughout the child’s life, wherever and whenever families need it – in our welcoming hospices, in family homes and in the community.

Our services are free and we have an open referral system. We are there for the whole journey, supporting families from the birth or diagnosis of their child, until they reach the age of 18; or for up to five years after their death.

We are a lifeline for parents facing the devastating reality that their child may not live into adulthood. These regular and short breaks allows mums and dads to have some sense of a normal life; they can catch up with day-to-day tasks like food shopping, sleeping, cleaning, or spending time with their other children, safe in the knowledge that their child is being looked after by people they know and trust.

Having a life-limited child in the family impacts everyone, so we offer support and social opportunities for the whole family. We organise bespoke activities and events, so mums, dads, siblings and grandparents are able to spend quality time together and form friendships with other families in similar circumstances.

  • Aims

Julia's House - The Dorset and Wiltshire Children's Hospices aims to:

    • Maximise quality of life for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions by providing regular respite care, support in emergencies and end-of-life care.
    • Provide children and their families with the best possible care (we are rated Outstanding by the England's independent healthcare regulator, the Care Quality Commission)
    • Let families choose where they receive respite support - in our Dorset or Wiltshire hospices, in their own homes or out in the community - wherever they most need our help.
    • Support the whole family, helping siblings, parents and grandparents cope with the emotional, physical and financial strains of looking after a very poorly child.
