  • Mission statement

Scottish Opera is Scotland’s national opera company and the largest performing arts organisation in Scotland. Founded in 1962, the Company is committed to bringing world class opera to as many people as possible across Scotland.

Scottish Opera exists to perform and annually presents four main stage productions each year in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness. The Company tours over 50 other theatres, village halls and community centres with small scale touring productions.

The Company invests in new talent through its Emerging Artist programme that nurtures young singers and in its commitment to annually commissioning new opera. Over the last three years Scottish Opera has commissioned 15 short operas as part of its commitment to nurturing opera makers.

Scottish Opera embodies life-long learning. The Education department was founded in 1971 and is the longest established and one of the largest education and outreach units of any European opera company.

Scottish Opera will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2012 with a New Opera Festival premiering four new commissions.
