English Touring Opera

English Touring Opera is the leading touring opera company in the UK. We aim to make live opera accessible to all, with a varied repertoire of high-quality professional productions throughout the UK

Founded 1979

  • Mission statement

ETO believes that everybody should have access to stimulating live opera. We strive to remove geographic and financial barriers which may prevent people experiencing this powerful art form.

Our mission is to engage as many people as possible across the country with vibrant, innovative and high quality live opera. We seek to stimulate new access, understanding and appreciation of the genre of opera, whilst promoting the development of the highest performance standards and enlivening career development opportunities for our young singers, directors, designers and conductors.

Engaging with live opera does not just mean attending performances. People derive huge benefits by participating in other ways. Each year we deliver creative projects for schools, young people with learning disabilities, people with dementia and their carers, community groups and those living in areas of social deprivation. For each of these groups we use live opera to provide life-changing experiences with long term benefits, improving the quality of life for people in the communities we visit.

  • Aims

    English Touring Opera aims to:

    • 4) Provide vital professional development opportunities for young singers, directors, designers and conductors, helping them at an early stage in their career
    • 1) Tour high quality productions of live opera to people across the UK, overcoming geographic and financial barriers which may prevent people from engaging with this incredible art form
    • 2) Tour varied and interesting repertoire, including world premieres and rarely-performed works, prioritising towns and cities with limited arts provision
    • 3) Complement our mainstage productions with a wide-ranging education and community programme, using live opera as a starting point to improve the lives of people in the communities we tour to
