Alinafe is a Scottish charity which is raising funds for building a multi-functional resource centre in a very deprived community in Ntchisi, Malawi. The centre is being built by members of the local community and will be run primarily by women belonging to the Mothers' Union (a women's organisation within the Anglican Church) in Ntchisi. It will offer a range of services including testing and counselling for those with HIV and AIDS; a range of education programmes for both children and adults; support services for the orphans in the area; a library and reading room; a venue for community events and a venue for mothers' union and other church activities.
The Project, which is well underway, still needs about £10,000 to finish, decorate and equip the building. The long-term aim is that it will be self-sustaining through events and sales of arts and crafts. Alinafe has direct links with the community and virtually no running costs so it is in the unusual position of being able to give all monies received directly to the community who are organising the building work themselves.
