The Royal Star & Garter Homes

The Royal Star & Garter Homes is a charity founded in 1916. We were
established to care for the severely disabled young men returning from the
battlegrounds of the First World War.
Today we provide brilliant care to the whole military family in our friendly,
modern and comfortable homes. Elderly and disabled ex-Service men and
women, and their partners, can all benefit from our pioneering approach to
nursing and therapeutic care.
We are proud to have enjoyed Royal patronage since our foundation, including
that of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II from 1953 to the present day.

  • Mission statement

The Royal Star & Garter Charity provides high quality care to disabled ex-Service men and women, and to the widows, partners and spouses of ex-Service people.

We aim to create a comfortable home environment for our residents in which they can lead full and active lives. Our residents enjoy a wide range of therapies, outings and activities. These services have a marked impact on our residents’ quality of life, increasing mobility, building confidence and nurturing independence.

In recognition of the changing needs of the ex-Service community, the Charity is building three new state of the art care homes. Each home will accommodate 60 residents, providing large en suite bed-sitting rooms, and a specialised Dementia Care wing. The modern facilities will also allow us to accommodate younger Service personnel injured in more recent conflicts.

Our first new home opened in Solihull in August 2008, winning the Pinders Healthcare Design Award in the Larger Care Home category in 2009. The Solihull Home has already achieved a 2 star “Good” rating from the Care Quality Commission, after its first year of operation. We are delighted by this recognition of our high quality facilities and nursing care, and hope to replicate this success in our two further new homes. These new homes will enable us to extend our high quality care to disabled ex-Service people where it is most needed.
