Providing children with inspiring theatre that feeds their imaginations using a rich mix of performance, puppetry, music and sound. Celebrated for creating touring shows and site-specific experiences

Founded 1995

  • Mission statement

Theatre-Rites’ mission is to feed the imaginations of young people, giving them a memorable theatrical experience by producing pioneering, innovative work, which opens the doors for other artists and companies. We create UK and international touring and site-specific productions and are committed to collaborating with different artforms in order to present children with unusual contemporary imagery and to push the boundaries of theatrical form.

Through our work we raise the profile of original devised work, which is not reliant on adaptation or syndicated TV characters. One of our key aims is to address the imbalance of engagement opportunities offered to children and families to experience immersive, interactive and site-specific events.

We are dedicated to providing unique training opportunities through our bursary and research and development projects, making our own exciting contribution to a growing artistic and cultural exchange. To complement the wealth of script-led work available, we specifically promote understanding and enjoyment of "object-led" theatre, which celebrates the power of visuals, puppetry, animation and site-responsive work.

We are influenced and inspired by our audience and in essence, we aim to ensure that children are offered theatrical experiences that are challenging and inspirational with the same integrity of content and high production values as the best adult work being created.

  • Aims

    Theatre-Rites aims to:

    • To create ground-breaking theatre for young audiences, with the same quality and integrity of content and production values as the best adult theatre around.
    • To lead the way for other companies
    • To continue to build audiences, accessing those from diverse communities and areas of high deprivation, though links with venues and development agencies.
    • To provide families with opportunities to experience installation and site-specific work, which is more readily provided for adult only audiences.
