Hempsted Playgroup

Hempsted Playgroup is located within our wholly owned building and is registered for 24 children between 2 years 6 months and statutory school age. We are open Monday - Friday from 9-12 and for 38 weeks of the year to coincide with the term dates of the adjacent Hempsted Primary School. We have 3 full-time staff members who all hold the level 3 Early Years qualification. Playgroup is supported by a voluntary committee of 6 local mothers, who are responsible for its day to day running from staffing to building maintenance. We rely totally on fundraising and government funding grants to pay for all expenses from staff wages and bills through to the resources required to provide structured activities for the children's education in accordance with the Foundation Stage.

Currently there is a major housing development taking place in the village with 300 new houses being built. This extensive increase in the number of people living in our village will bring more children to playgroup as we are the only facility in Hempsted available for pre-school children.

Our playgroup has already improved vastly in the last 12 months. We were judged as unsatisfactory by Ofsted and our whole team have worked extremely hard to improve our grade. We recruited new staff and thanks to major fundraising activities over the past 12 months we now have great resources for the children. We have managed to purchase new furniture for the reading corner, a computer in order to take full advantage of educational software available through e-learning grants; as well as a camera & printer to enhance our children's avtivity notice boards. Ofsted are pleased with all our hard work and the improvements we have made and we gained satisfactory status.

Now that we have achieved our potential inside the playgroup we feel that we need to concentrate on our outdoor area, especially with spring on the way! We need to allow children to undertake a range of activities in the fresh air in an extended classroom role. Ideally we would like to install a canopy adjoined to the building as an outdoor extension to the classroom and this would give the children the chance to carry out a whole range of activities. We would also like to provide a new outdoor play surface with playground furniture and raised flower beds for a nature area. The whole community, who is regularly updated about our activities by means of the Parish magazine, will benefit from these installations and we are sure that they will be greatly appreciated by everyone.
