Totnes and Dartmouth Ring and Ride

We are a local based charity, which has been offering door to door transport to frail elderly and disabled, who find the use of conventional public transport difficult, since 1993. We carry approximately 4,000 passengers per year helping them to maintain a level of independence they would otherwise by unable to attain, by enabling them to do their own shopping, visit friends, join in leisure activities and visit places they would normally be unable to reach. We also run passenger clubs for outings and our vehicles are available for private hire to other groups, who meet our criteria. This service is particularly necessary, as we cover a large area, which is predominately rural and public transport is extremely limited. We have therefore amended our consitution to allow us to carry people who are 'socially excluded' by virtue of where they live.

We currently operate two 15-seater minibuses and one 5-seater people carrier, all of which are specially adapted to carry wheelchairs and have either a tail-lift or a ramp. These vehicles are leased from Devon County Council and we undertake school contracts in order to assist the funding of our service. We receive grants from the local County, District, Town and Parish councils, but still have to find in excess of £10,000 per year to continue to run the service at its' current level. We have identified some major gaps in the local transport system and therefore a need to expand the service further into areas such as hospital visiting and to assist in the transport of people to individual appointments. In order to do this, we would like initially to upgrade our current people carrier to an 8-seater. This would naturally incur costs in addition to our existing revenue costs. We are therefore looking for assistance to help with our current revenue costs with a view to raising further funds in order to expand the service.
