The Small School

The Small School is an independent secondary school in Hartland, an isolated village in North Devon. It was set up 25 years ago by Satish Kumar and other local parents to provide an education for local children modelled on the family not the factory. The school does not charge fees and is open to all. Many of the students come from disadvantaged backgrounds, some have not been able to cope in large secondary schools, a few have been school refusers and others have very focussed interests and abilities. The curriculum places equal emphasis on the academic, the practical, the creative and the spiritual aspects of a child's development. An emphasis is placed on care of the environment, including learning to cook and grow healthy food, recycling, and ecological living. Parents and students organise and run community activities for the village, such as a very succesful monthly Famers Market and a weekly Youth Club.
The school does not charge fees and is open to all. To finance the school we rely heavily on our supporters and on fund raising by parents and students. The Small School has actively campaigned for a more human-scale, creative approach to education in the state sector.
