Friendship Works improves the emotional well-being and life chances of children and young people who face multiple disadvantages by recruiting adult volunteer mentors who provide long-term mentoring.
Established in 1977, Friendship Works is the UK's oldest children's mentoring charity and a pioneer in the field.
We currently support 152 children aged 5-18 in the London boroughs of Islington, Camden and Southwark. There are a further vulnerable 33 children on our waiting list.
We receive referrals from social services, schools and other professionals. The children we help face a range of challenges such as being affected by domestic violence, addiction or bereavement, having a disability or mental health problems and/or caring for a parent who is sick or disabled. In the vast majority of cases children's circumstances are exacerbated by poverty. Children are at risk of being trapped in cycles of disadvantage and poor outcomes throughout their lives.
We use a robust process to recruit and train adult volunteer mentors. Each child is carefully matched to a mentor who take them out on three weekends out of four for a minimum of two years. Our team of professional caseworkers closely supervise and support mentors through weekly calls.
Friendship Works aims to:
- To improve children and young people's social and emotional development through access to quality friendship.
- To enable children and young people to have a better view of themselves, a strong sense of identity and increased resilience.
- To broaden children and young people's horizons through access to new opportunities.
