FREEDOM FROM TORTURE

Freedom from Torture is dedicated to the therapeutic care of survivors of torture and organised violence, the majority of whom arrive in the UK seeking sanctuary from persecution in other countries

Founded 1985

  • Mission statement

Freedom from Torture is the only organisation in the UK dedicated solely to the treatment of survivors of torture and organised violence. Formerly known as The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, we were founded in 1985 in since then over 50,000 people has been referred to us for help.

Torture is an age-old form of abuse that pushes its victims to terrible extremes of physical and psychological pain with often lifelong consequences. Survivors often suffer from chronic pain, anxiety, flashbacks, nightmare & insomnia, and an inability to trust anyone, all compounded by the practical difficulties of a life in exile.

Our clinicians work in multi-disciplinary teams to provide integrated services in a holistic approach. We have five centres across the UK where we offer psychiatry, clinical psychology, psychotherapy, counselling, complementary therapies and support with housing and welfare.

We also speak out alongside survivors to raise awareness and influence decision makers.

Freedom from Torture is the working name of the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, a registered charity (number 1000340).
95% of our resources come from voluntary donations.
