We are the Scottish arm of the English-Speaking Union, a world-wide voluntary sector movement, now in over 50 countries, dedicated to promoting international understanding and friendship through English. We are a membership organisation.
In Scotland we run a number of international scholarship and exchange programmes, teach English as a foreign language, and co-operate with other bodies in organisaing cultural events. However, our main focus is on speech, debate and communications education for young people. Access to these activities makes a huge difference to the life-chances of children, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds, and we work closely with the Scottish Government and local authorities in bringing speech and debate to schools that have not traditionally offered them to their pupils.
