Arthritis Care is the UK’s largest organisation working with and for all people who have arthritis. Our vision is to see a society in which the needs of people living with arthritis are understood, respected and fully met.
Arthritis isn’t just one disease; it is a term that describes a complex disorder that comprises more than 200 distinct conditions and can affect people at any stage of life. Two of the most common forms are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. These two forms have very different causes, risk factors, and effects on the body, yet they often share a common symptom—persistent joint pain. There are nine million people with arthritis in the UK. That’s nine million individuals, plus their families, friends and carers, each affected in a unique way.
People with arthritis are involved in all our activities, at every level and direct what we do. Our mission is to offer people with arthritis in the UK the information and support they need to make informed choices about managing their arthritis and lead full lives.
Some of the ways in which we help people with arthritis include;
• A free, confidential helpline, manned by trained counsellors with up-to-the minute information on all issues surrounding arthritis, helping over 10,000 callers each year
• Distributing over half a million award winning booklets annually on living with and managing arthritis
•Lobbying at a national level to ensure that truly informed decisions are made with regard to allocation of treatment and availablity of drugs
•Campaigning locally through our supporters and branch structure to ensure that important local services and facilities are retained and funded
•Delivering a range of practical courses through trained volunteers to give an individual back the personal self-confidence and the practical techniques of pain control and symptom management, that will ensure a better quality of life.
In the next five years we’re aiming to make sure that every person with arthritis in the UK knows we are here to help them.
