Befriending & Support Service
Home-Start Slough is a local charity that offers support, friendship and practical help to parents with young children in the Slough and Burnham area.
We offer a unique service, recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers to visit families in their own home. All the families will have with at least one child under five and the family will be suffering from stressful situations ranging from financial deprivation, physical or mental disability, abuse, neglect or isolation. Our aim is to prevent crises and family breakdown. Our volunteers give practical help, emotional support and friendship to struggling families in our local community.
Our running costs are about £14,000 per month with 5 part time salaried employees, however, core funding to cover salary costs for existing staff and office costs for charities such as ours is extremely difficult to obtain. In recent years funds available for distribution have shrunk considerably with the PCT and Local Authority unable to support charities such as ours in a financial way. Also the majority of charitable funds are only available for new projects or for development work; charities that are already providing a service to the community are unable to access these funds.
We are currently desperately trying to secure some funding from the Local Authority and various grant programmes to ensure we can continue to support 110 families in the area in the next year, but budgets everywhere are being cut. We currently have sufficient funds to continue the service until June 08, after this we shall need to draw on the charity’s reserves to give notice to the staff and ultimately cease the service within 6 months.
