  • Mission statement

Home-Start is the UK’s leading family support charity. We recruit and train volunteers to support parents with at least one child under the age of five. Our home visiting work is unique in the UK. The charity was set up in 1973 and now supports nearly 35,000 families and over 71,000 children each year. Almost 16,000 volunteers visit families in their own homes – parents supporting parents in a variety of situations including isolation, bereavement, multiple births, illness or disability.
Although part of a large organisation, each scheme is independent and has to be self sufficient in funding. Here at Stockland Green/Erdington we are in a multi-cultural area where all nationalities are welcome. As well as the core work of volunteering we run 3 family groups a week where families can come with their children to meet and talk in confidence, children can play all in a non-judgemental and stimulating environment. We run ESOL classes once a week to teach English where it is not a persons first language. We also run a Baby Club for parents and babies up to one year. We have recently started a counselling service for children aged 4 - 11 years and for parents too. Families have as much or as little support as they want from Home-Start, it is their choice. We are completely confidential except when a child is at risk.
