“Sport has the power to unite people in a way little else can. Sport can create hope where there was only despair. It breaks down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of discrimination. Sport speaks to people in a language they can understand. "
Despite the public image of high-profile black and Asian athletes, these communities are under-represented at every level in sport, from participation, to coaching to policy-making. This has a huge impact on their health, their education and their overall life chances.
Sporting Equals exists to eradicate racial discrimination in sport, and is the only organisation in the UK to do so. We inform, influence and inspire in order to create an environment in which ethnic minorities, refugees and migrant communities can influence and participate in all aspects of sport and where cultural diversity is recognised and celebrated.
We want to raise £1 million in order to give young ethnic minorities across the UK the chance to get involved in the Olympics and Paralympics 2012. We want to see an Olympics that is truly diverse in terms of volunteers, coaches and administrators. And most importantly, we want the legacy of these Games to be a more inclusive sporting world that gives opportunity to all.
