Ovarian Cancer Action

We aim to improve the prognosis of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer, transforming treatment and improving survival rates through research and national availability of symptoms information for women and healthcare professionals.

Founded 2005

  • Mission statement

Ovarian cancer claims the life of a woman in the UK every 2 hours, the UK's biggest gynaecological killer. The UK has amongst the lowest 5 year survival rates in the developed world at less than 40%. Despite this many women have still not heard of ovarian cancer and do not know the symptoms. The majority of women who die from ovarian cancer do so because their diagnosis is at a late stage. But, if caught early, 2 out of every 3 women diagnosed are likely to survive more than 5 years. Our passion is to reach every woman and GP in the UK with key symptoms information. We believe this will contribute to ensuring that a greater proportion of women are diagnosed as early as possible giving women a greater chance of survival. Ovarian cancer is a highly recurrent disease and whilst the most effective treatment is platinum based chemotherapy, after initial success when tumours recur, 70% of women become resistant to this treatment, leaving oncologists a significant deficit in treatment options. Ovarian Cancer Action is determined to change the outlook for women with the disease through the creation of a research environment that encourages scientific breakthrough at the UK’s first and only dedicated ovarian cancer research facility. Scientists there continually work to better understand the disease, how and why it develops and to devise strategies that improve the way it is both diagnosed and treated.
